InsideSchools Review

Our review:

Saint Dominic's TORCH annex pre-kindergarten serves English speaking and bilingual (English/Spanish) children in the Fordham neighborhood of the Bronx.

Teachers follow the Creative Curriculum, a play-based program organized around themes such as "summer." Teachers read books about summer, for example, and kids enjoy summer-themed art projects such as painting suns or flowers. Children may use beach balls to practice counting. They take field trips to study the wider world. [photo from the St. Dominic's TORCH website]

St. Dominic's TORCH is one of few early childhood programs that meet the standards set by the respected National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC).

The pre-k is one of many programs under the umbrella of Saint Dominic's Home, a social services agency founded in 1878. It is located in the same building as St. Simon Stock Parish, a Catholic church, and a K-8 school called St. Dominic's.

ADMISSIONS: Priority to low-income families; the 60 full-day seats did not fill in 2015. (Katie Radvany/Lydie Raschka, web reports, 2016)
